Broker Background
What started as a chance introduction to Risk Placement Services (RPS) just after college quickly evolved into a thriving career in wholesale insurance. Now, as a key leader helping manage a team of 16, Austin leverages his disciplined approach and strong communication skills to drive growth — both for his team and his clients. In this interview, Austin shares his perspective on the evolving insurance landscape and offers valuable insights for the next generation of brokers.
How have you seen the insurance industry change?
“The need for specialized coverage has grown significantly since I entered the industry in 2018. As society and technology advance, industries face more unique risks, and the demand for tailored solutions has surged. We’ve seen this especially in areas like cyber and management liability, where policies have to adapt to rapidly evolving threats and industry-specific needs. Moving forward, specialization will be essential as coverages continue to evolve alongside societal and technological changes.”
What’s one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned working in insurance?
“Communication is everything. I’ve learned that most problems stem from poor communication, whether it’s with clients, carriers, or team members. Setting clear expectations and ensuring everyone is aligned helps avoid misunderstandings and builds trust. Good communication isn’t just about solving problems — it’s about preventing them from happening in the first place.”
If you were to give advice to a young person working in insurance, what would it be?
“Find a good mentor. I was fortunate to find one early in my career, and it made a world of difference in my development. Beyond that, put in the work and be a sponge — absorb everything you can from those around you. It’s easy to say you’re going to work hard, but actually doing it consistently is what sets you apart.”
What is your proudest or most fulfilling career moment?
“The most fulfilling part of my career has been transitioning from being a mentee to becoming a mentor. Watching the people I’ve guided find their footing, gain confidence, and achieve success is incredibly rewarding. It’s a full-circle moment that not only reflects their growth but also highlights the importance of strong leadership and support within a team.”
Describe your insurance career in one word.
“Discipline. Staying disciplined in delivering on promises, maintaining high standards, and keeping both myself and my team accountable has been essential to my success. Being consistent has helped build trust with clients and contributed to the growth of our team.”
What do you value most about your partnership with Counterpart?
“The people. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do, and Counterpart excels at fostering genuine connections. In a virtual world where personal touches can easily be lost, Counterpart allows its team — from underwriters to claims managers — to be authentic. That authenticity creates a stronger, more effective partnership.”
